Near gale force winds on Kentucky Lake

It was like we were back on Lake Michigan or a rough day on lake pepin. I had a hunch the strong south winds forecast would kick up on this north south lake and I was too right.

We decided if marina would let us stay today we would not travel due to wind and possible storm, but if they were full we would make the trip, as it sounded like a typical windy st croix river day. Sure enough at 8:30am the marina said they were fully booked and we’d have to leave our spot, so we left.

Pictures and video don’t capture the full extent of the near gale force constant wind, we never really could get out of a long fetch so we got our first rough weather day with the boat, it was a good safe test for us and the boat.

The canvas kept us dry even though many of the waves threw water up to the hardtop . We estimate 3-4 foot sharp waves and NWS reported constant 22 to 33 mph winds all afternoon.

Red sky in the morning, sailers take warning
The boat cut the waves well but the strong wind still caught the spray
Here is what it felt like at the helm at 8 mph

Was great to pull into Paris Landing Marina and have a smooth landing…and a martini.

  1. Looks like a fun ride. Boat seem to handle it well. I bet that Martini tasted very good after a day like that 😂😁.
