When asked “what’s been the biggest surprise so far?” We found it was a difficult question to answer, we’re always surprised by what Mother Nature dishes up to us. Like the beautiful FL sunrises and sunsets, no two ever looking the same, or wildlife that you happen to spot and we never tire of the dolphins that come play in our wake as we are cruising. Sometimes its the craziest things that bring a smile to your face, like these Pelicans perched on the outboard motors that we just happen to see cruising by. It’s a always a pleasant surprise to see Loopers that show up to the marina with the AGLCA burgee and sure enough it happens to be someone we met way back at Alton or traveled with through a lock on the Ten-Tom. But the biggest and best surprises that we’ve encountered is meeting up with and spending time with our Minnesota friends . For on the Loop they say to have a plan but no schedule, mostly due to weather and wanting the flexibility to linger at any one port you find interesting. Which makes it difficult to tell peope where exactly we will be and when we will be there. But somehow we’ve managed to connect with many friends, some planned and some impromptu and have even met new MN connnections along our route. We have enjoyed connecting with friends who are down here for the winter and have found us along the way and reached out for a drink, a dinner or a tour of their home. We realize that we haven’t been “real time” with this blog and that we missed some of you along the way, and do apologize for that. But we will be easy to find in February as we will be in Marathon for the entire month, so surprise us if you’re in the area and look us up!
Just happen to snag this photo as I was in the Galley doing dishes, as this boat came crusing by at a fairly good clip with these passengers on board their motors. Hilarious!Rip and Lilly from Afton Marina now reside in Ft Myers in the beautiful community of Gulf Harbor. We loved their spacious condo and enjoyed dining with them at the restaurant on property. This was one of those impromptu get togethers and we’re so glad it happend. What a surprise! We reconnected with Scott and Nancy who just purchased a home in Naples. Scott and Ron worked together back in the late ’90s. Hopefully we will catch them again on the Loop at their summer home in MI.Met up with dear friends who used to reside in MN now retired and living in OR. This was a planned get together at the Pink Shell Resort and Marina on Fort Myers Beach, but always thankful when the weather works out and we are able arrive at our destination as planned. Enjoyed the free umbrellas and chairs on the beach, the cocktails and the heated pool at Pink Shell. These two SCYC friends found us in Naples so we had brunch at the beautiful Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. Then we made a much needed Costco run.We had 16 SCYC friends drive from all over SW FL to dine at dinner at CJ’s on the Bay on Marco Island, some were able to join up with us on the boat prior to dinner. Made us kind of homesick but we sure do appreciate this gang and the effort they made to connect.Afton Marina “D” dock neighbors and friends, Bruce and Suzi shared wine with us on Flying Colors, then we dined at Marco Island Yacht Club and celebrated Suzi’s Birthday! These two were incredible harbor hosts to us. They loaned us a red Jeep, invited us to a home cooked meal at their home, which was a real treat and let us use their “tubs”, both laundry and hot tub. They spoiled us with a brunch at their club in their development and because of these two we had a truly Re-Marco-able time on Marco Island. Many thanks!
