Beaufort, NC pronounced (bow-fort) is the third oldest town in NC. Sometimes referred to as the Southern Outer Banks. It’s a popular destination for tourists and second home owners who populate the town during the summer months. This once active seaport is not only loaded with history, but today offers restaurants, sites, museums, and galleries just steps away from the downtown marina. Definitely, our favorite stop in NC. We would recommend it to anyone traveling in the area, we were there four nights and barely scratched the surface of what this seaside village has to offer. The NC Maritime Museum focuses on pirate history, the architectural golf cart tour focuses on the historic homes in town and the Cape Lookout National Seashore offers beaches, dunes, shelling, wild Shackelford horses and an abundance of critters!
Silent Sam outside the Carterett County Court House square. Beaufort’s historic Front St Original town Apothecary still in businessNot uncommon for gravestones to be visited by families to enjoy a Sunday picnic with Grandpa. This site and others served as the picnic table. The Old Burying Ground had a particularly fascinating history. A phone ap called Uniguide directs you to the gravesites of the civil war heroes and tells their stories. The grave above belongs to the “little rum girl”. This dear one died at sea after visiting her homeland of England, the father promised the mother he would bring the girl back home safely, so could not bear to bury her at sea and put her remains in a rum barrel until they returned to Beaufort. It was customary to place toys and trinkets on a child’s grave in those days. Some Loopers search for the best BBQ, the best ice cream, the wineries, or craft breweries, we search out the best bakeries, in search of the best sourdough. This little bakery, only opens on Thursday-Sunday, offered a beautiful selection of artisan bread and serves croissants only on Saturdays. We waited in line for croissants and bought a couple of loaves to freeze for later. Typical Beaufort home with double porch.Victorian Painted ladies are also respresented in the area. 45 Sears Roebuck “kit” homes can be found in this town. Sold in their catalog back in the early 1900’s they sent you everything you needed to construct your own home. This is the oldest home in Beaufort, once a boarding house for pirates, it’s said that Blackbeard stayed here when in port. We spoke to the roofer and he said he removed seven layers of various types of roofs before he could begin replacing it.Our second Maritime museum had artifacts and stories from Blackbeard’s ship Queen Anne’s RevengeEnded our time in Beaufort with Docktales on Flying Colors with Calucy Too and Gold Loopers Selah Away
