Goodbye Georgian Bay

We traveled on the open waters of Lake Huron for 14 miles, the most exposed portion of the trip on Georgian Bay, then headed back onto the small craft channel to Beaverstone Bay into the Collins Inlet, this was a longer route but we experienced some of the best scenery of Georgian Bay.

Cruising through Collins Inlet, Georgian Bay

We completed our 168-mile journey through Georgian Bay greeted by the Killarney Lighthouse and the Killarney Mountain Lodge. Some consider this the eastern starting point of the North Channel. The town of Killarney is not much to write home about, but the Lodge was such a treat in the middle of this wilderness experience. Opened only in Spring thru Fall seasons, the Lodge has the largest log conference center, the world’s largest Canoe Paddle, and all the amenities of a great resort. We enjoyed time by the pool, the gym, and the restaurants. We took another very challenging and rocky hike to the lighthouse and were surrounded by great views and beautiful crystal clear water.

World’s largest log conference center, the Canada House, the location of the conference center, gym, and restaurant.
Had a wonderful dinner with great views at the Ranch House restaurant inside the conference center.
Largest Gym we found on the Loop and no one there.
This was part of the Killarney Lighthouse trail, rocky, steep salmon-colored granite rock
View of the channel along the Lighthouse Trail
Killarney Lighthouse was about a 4 mile hike on rock with elevation
The world’s largest paddle, “The Big Dipper” was made to celebrate Kilarney’s 200th anniversary. It’s 107 feet long and weighs 22,000 pounds. It commemorates the early traders who canoed Georgian Bay and the No. Channel to transport their products.
We met these fellow Merdian boat owners, Rich and Maggie, they bought their boat, a Meridian 459 on the St. Croix River, they completed the Great Loop but continue to cruise out of Lake Michigan
We were docked at the sister resort of Killarney Mountain Lodge, Sportsmens, the Lodge provided free shuttle service to the town and the resort facilities.
Saying Good Night and Good Bye to Georgian Bay as we head out to the North Channel.

  1. Ron and Nancy,

Love your recount of your trip and all the great pictures. I have really enjoyed reading your blog.

Funny you met Rich and Maggie Selo on their Meridian 459. It was their boat that I picked up in MN on the St Croix and took to their home port on Lake Michigan. That is when I met Ron for the first time and we had lunch. As I recall, you were brand new Meridian 441 owners and had recently joined MYO. The boating world is very small indeed. We traveled some with Rich and Maggie during our Loop back in 2018 and then spent time with them in Marathon. Continued safe travels. – Keith
